Always The Bridesmaids...

The Dana Girls, Trixie Belden and Nurse Cherry Ames never became mythical icons a la the titian-haired Miss Nancy Drew and her chums Bess Marvin and George Fayne, but they were entertaining lasses in their own right. However, unlike Nancy, these gals were anachronisms incapable of adapting to new times and mores, and they eventually fizzled out (those tenacious Dana Girls lasted the longest, until 1979). Still, even as a kid, I always rooted for the underdogs, and although I collected every single Nancy Drew mystery (quelle surprise!), I wore these books out at the local library. I'm sure there were more than a few librarians questioning why this 11 year old boy was checking out four or five Trixie Beldens at a time, but at least it kept me off the streets.

"Thees way to zee naked, all-girl grape stomping party!"

Was teenage Sappho ever so poignantly rendered by the artist's brush?

"We just had a threeway in between ladies' lingerie and sporting goods!"
